I live in Chicago area. Italian beef sandwiches are much more popular than cheesesteaks around here. But there’s a cheesesteak “chain” that’s opening locations very near me. They have some kind of deal going on. And they get very good reviews. I may just head over there and pick one up! :face_savoring_food:

Enjoy opening day, fellow snarkers! I’m a Chicagoan, more a White Sox than a Cubs fan, but opening day is always Cubs Cubs Cubs. And that’s fine. I gotta work anyway, so wouldn’t be starting the party at 6 a.m. like the hardcore baseball fans…

I know (knew) several Vietnam vets. This made me think of two specifically. Two of my neighbors from the house I grew up in. One seemed to be happy and healthy, the other had hearing damage from his tour and lifelong health effects from being exposed to Agent Orange. He seemed emotionally OK but we don’t see all of people’s struggles. I don’t remember if it was Veterans’ Day or just because but my mom saw him out in front of his house, walked up and gave him a hug and said “thank you.” That’s the energy we need.

:candle: :candle: :candle: My cousin was a helicopter gunner, and twice the helicopter was shot down, but he miraculously survived his injuries, only to be diagnosed with two types of cancer as a result of exposure to Agent Orange at the time when the government denied that Agent Orange was a real thing. Through the remainder of his live he volunteered with the Disabled American Veterans, and was also active in fighting for legislation to declare Agent Orange a bona fide medical condition, and the government should be made responsible for funding medical care for vets who suffered from exposure. He passed away from the disease at the age of 63, and yes, I am proudly stating that he was awarded several medals and commendations for his service during and after the Vietnam War. He was laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery in a ceremony that was so moving that it stills brings tears to my eyesI am so proud that despite the odds, he never gave up, and never complained. But I am most proud too say that he was my cousin.

I’m so sorry that he had to deal with so much pain and suffering. How he turned that into such a positive for so many people through his volunteer work and pursuing positive change & accountability is true heroism. He deserved every honor bestowed upon him, plus more.
