Reseller Central

Any resellers out there? I noticed a few people mention they sell on eBay, Poshmark, Mercari, etc., so I decided to start a thread where we can share tips, rants, snark, achievements, and whatever else related to the reseller game.

I mostly wanted to start this topic to rant about how pathetic ThredUp has become (as a seller). I always thought of ThredUp as my backup reselling platform (when I couldn’t move merch on Poshmark), but it’s not worth it anymore. The way they’ve raised fees and make you wait even longer to get a few coins off your sales has me at my wits end. After everything is sold from my last clean out kit, I’m closing my account.

Howeverrrrrr, I discovered a HACK! And this is what I REALLY wanted to share with y’all!!!

So ThredUp partnered with Madewell to create “Madewell Forever.” The idea is the same as ThredUp- you download a prepaid label to return your gently used apparel, but instead of cashing out or getting ThredUp credit when your items sell, your earnings accumulate to a Madewell gift card. And you don’t get charged any fees. You don’t even need to create an account. You just go to the Madewell Forever site, print a label, send in your goods, and when they receive it, they’ll send you an email with a link to follow the progress of your items (they don’t show you what items were or weren’t accepted though). When all your items sell, then they email you again with a Madewell gift card.

I tried this once. I sent a small batch of total crap and still earned a $14 Madewell gift card. I have to send in a lot of stuff to ThredUp just to earn $14, so I think I did pretty well. And I like Madewell, so I used it to buy something from there, but then another idea struck me…

I could send in stuff, get a Madewell gift card, then sell that gift card on a gift card reselling site for a different gift card of my choice.

So I’m going to try that and see how it works out. It seems more lucrative than getting charged left and right and ending up with a few dollars transferred to PayPal when I go through ThredUp.

Well, that’s my tip. Can’t wait to hear what y’all think and any tips you have!

@PopItInUrWasher ohhh what a great idea! I’m no reseller but I off load things I no longer wear or use Poshmark, eBay and Facebook marketplace (temp-tations items) I love to thrift but the thrift stores around me act like they’re Macys with their price points. Salvation Army has $2.99 on all apparel items this Friday Saturday. A good time for outer wear, jeans, dresses, long sleeve shopping. I will keep that hack in mind while I shop.

Hi, I have been selling on eBay for over 20 years. The first 10 years or so I did really well. Back in those days I could go to Nordstrom Rack and buy fabulous high end handbags straight from the main store marked down ridiculously low. It was great and I made hundreds on each bag. Of course, I have loved designer clothes and handbags all my life so I knew what would sell. Then suddenly everyone discovered the deals there and the competition was ridiculous.
Now days Nordstrom Rack is an overpriced crummy store/ the merchandise very rarely comes from the main store. They have the same brands you can find at TJ Maxx and Marshall’s. Although they must be doing well as they keep opening new stores here in San Diego.
Anyway, business is very slow on eBay for me now. I do the thrift store routine as well but not too often as they have become super overpriced too.
I like the idea of selling the Madewell gift card for another gift card as I very rarely see anything I want to own from Madewell. So I’m anxious to know how that goes.

thrifting isn’t a thing here, real estate is expensive and it’s just not part of the culture–people are more donation thinking
I find estate sales are good for getting some nice stuff

Make sure your region is having the sale before you go. I’m in metro LA and my daughter is in San Francisco so I follow both stores Instagrams. Both stores are for sure running the sale. That leads me to believe all of CA SA stores are having the sale. I get there early because the parking lot gets nuts and street parking is metered for 1 hour -
I can’t be relaxed and shop the entire store in 1 hr.

I’ve been selling designer jewelry and handbags on EBAY for 20 years. I had 3 sales in the last 2 weeks but it has been real slow for over a year. AWD, when I started it was awesome and I sold a lot the first 10 years, times have changed. :pensive:

Did you go the sale? I got a ton of stuff (mainly for me) 2 pants, 3 pair of jeans, tops, two dresses and a couple outer wear items. Each item for $2.99. But the piece de resistance is this Burberry Quilted vest!

I’m not reselling - it will get good use with a pair of dark jeans, a black pull over sweater and a pair of loafers is how I’m styling it for fall. My clothes shopping bug has been satisfied for a while.

Great find! It’s so fun to find something designer that is good quality for a percentage of its original price.

So true! I get so much more satisfaction in how cheap I got something especially if it looks pricey.

This is what I need to do. Sell tons of stuff from my house! But I’ve never done any re-selling and it seems daunting to me. Especially the mailing/packing/sending stuff. I don’t get how you do that. Any of it really. But I wouldn’t mind learning. Hint, hint. :).
I’ve thought about going through all my stuff and selling it to someone local to sell? Or having an auction house or someone sell it? Obviously I no nothing about this either. I just know I have loads of stuff and my extra rooms are beginning to become hoarder central.

it can be fun, but you need to be realistic about it.
Poshmark is the easiest platform to start with b/ shipping is easy.
lmk if you want more info
