UglyBetty, you have been phenomenal and much too generous with your time and money hosting this site. If allowing ads would help you, so you don’t have to spend your own money, by all means allow them.
I am sorry that you have to deal with adults acting like children. That is uncalled for.
Thank you for all that you do and do what you feel is necessary.
Thank you ALL for your kind responses. I’ve been letting this bottle up for months. Not upset at anyone for mentioning other sites because I lurk too, guess that was just the last straw along with the harassing DMs.
If you’re okay with ads on this site, emoji this post.
To keep the site rules so loose, I wouldn’t be able to choose the ads. They’d be chosen by Google based on your individual browsing history and that of anyone else on your network. I can’t be responsible for questionable ads, but let’s say there was something inappropriate, you can both report the ad to Google and then DM me and I can submit a ticket to Google so it doesn’t show up on our site. If that sounds okay with you, like this post!
As far as the cost, it does vary month to month depending on traffic. It has been as high as a luxury car payment plus insurance, and it can be as low as a few hundred. This last month wasn’t as bad since everyone was wrapped up with the holidays, but costs over the summer were exorbitant. I don’t care about paying some of the cost, but it would be great if we could offset with ad revenue.
This is the most user friendly and cost effective forum software I’ve found and the customer service and tech support is excellent, so would prefer to keep it as is. I can change the color theme and backgrounds so the ads blend in better, right now it’s just the default setting.
Also, I’m fine with linking to other sites as long as they allow links back to us. Some of the snark pages are very funny and it’s not like you can’t be members of both!
@OhMyHeavens mentioned the racism/homophobia on other groups and that’s what I’ve tried so hard to avoid here while still allowing a free dialogue. You don’t have to be hateful to get your point across. Pretty much the reason I left Facebook…
Anyway, thanks again for reading and supporting. I’ll keep this site going as long as it’s feasible. We have a great community and I’d hate to lose it. Sorry for venting, and thank you again for listening. Means a lot.
I’m deeply saddened that things have come to this and that you’ve been treated so badly by some of the snarkers. You started this platform as a fun project, and I appreciate the hard work and expense that you put into giving us space where we could share personal stories and snark freely about the lunacy that is QVC and their hosts. I’ve enjoyed getting to know the people on this forum, on the whole I think we’re a good bunch. But at the same time, I understand your frustration with thin skinned hothead posters and their tantrums. You shouldn’t have received that kind of abuse. Why do a few malcontents always have to spoil a great thing?
Like many others here, I was unaware of the cost involved in keeping the site going. My apologies for not inquiring about it. You make the choice that feels right for you when deciding the fate of the forum. If you want to let it go, thank you thank you for your efforts and the entertainment they provided. But if you decide to continue, I wholly support posting ads to help you pay the freight - or whatever changes you need to keep your sanity and dignity while keeping the site alive.
Sorry, I didn’t mean to run on like this. But know that many of us have been grateful for all you do. And best wishes, whatever you decide happens next.
I know we have had some private conversations before about this, and about the morons who cause so many issues. I wish there was a way to keep them out of your life and off this board. Is there a second level of sign on we could do? I told you then and I will repeat it here, that I would be fine with ads, as annoying as they are, if it would help. As far as the traffic goes, once we are kind of done with both of the most offensive hosts (JCon and Kerselfish), do you think the numbers will go down? How about maybe limiting the number of times per day we can access the board? I check in many times a day, but I could learn to limit it to maybe three, if that would help. Does the amount of space count? I could totally do without all of the animated gifs that people post. Some are amusing, others just take up space. I know I am old, but words work better for me, in most cases!
I think you are absolutely amazing to do this for a bunch of people you don’t know. But, please know that we DO care about you and so appreciate your time and finances. If you think a couple of hundred dollars is a lower end, then I can’t even imagine the monthly bills you pay. I would also be happy to pay a minimal amount monthly (fixed income and all that), but I don’t want you to cover it all. That isn’t fair. I would offer to help you moderate, but you have scared the crap out of me with what you go through!
If you can think of anything that any of us could do to lighten your burden in some way, please let us know. As for now, it looks like no one is going to freak out about the ads (although, since we are shopping junkies, we may have to not be tempted). Or, maybe we are the right people to aid in your obtaining funds from links and ads!
Once again, THANK YOU so very much for this space and your ability to try to treat us as adults. I am so sorry that there are some of us who just aren’t.
If people are OK with ads, I’d prefer to start there rather than give up. The dopes harassing me have nothing on this community as a whole. Guess they can’t give it up either…
It would actually be better for ads if people checked in multiple times throughout the day, so I don’t think we’d have to limit that. More page views the better. Good idea on a second level of sign on, I’ll have to look into that with tech support. I can block IP addresses, but losers like that know all the tricks and I’m still learning.
UglyBetty, thank you so much for creating this forum. I’m sorry there are some users who have abused the privilege of being here and made you miserable. I would have no problem with ads on the site. Most sites I visit have ads anyway, so it would feel normal to me.
Thank you Ugly Betty! I appreciate your efforts and expertise maintaining, managing, and funding this site to keep this community entertained and supported. This is a fun, overall safe space to express our thoughts and views on what has become a guilty pleasure for many. Allowing Ads works for me to keep this place up and running. Hope you can figure out tighter security here maybe to give you peace of mind without losing valued members.
I rarely comment but enjoy reading the snark. I don’t watch QVC and am really here in memory of my Mom who started watching QVC for a good bargain and evolved into watching QVC to eyeroll, laugh, and ridicule the idiocy, thirst for validation, and desperate TMI (especially in the “hosts” whom I choose to call sales clerks) on the channel(s).
Ugly Betty’s approach to moderating has been something I appreciated. Not only has she not been heavy handed but she’s allowed nearly anything to be said, only pushing back when some specific, self-righteous participants covertly complained and pouted. I mean, some of these people were regularly making disgusting comments about minor children (Graho anyone?). And even those were left alone which I think is the best thing to do, in most cases, because awful people are revealed by their awful comments on message boards. I suppose she could have removed the comments but letting people show who they are is always the better way, from my perspective. And it’s rare in spaces like these.
@UglyBetty, I am glad you took the time to vent and help the community see behind the curtain. I think it helps everyone to better understand the dynamics and the investment that has been made. I’m fully supportive of allowing ads on this site in order to make the possibility that it can continue more feasible.
