The Newest and Most Opinionated “Hot Topic” @ The Snark … Everyone surely has an opinion regarding whose
balls are in what court. No need to be shy … freely spill the wine regarding this “magical merger”, while QVC still has Campanelli towels in stock …
I feel bad for the behind-the-scenes employees. The hosts will figure it out, one way or another.
Knowing how the Q conducts business, I’m guessing that a lot of their staff didn’t know what was happening behind the scenes until an official statement was about to be released. And some probably never heard the announcement until it was made public. Small wonder some of our faves have been acting strangely over the course of the past few weeks.
This “merger” feels like a last resort kind of move to hang onto an old way of selling product and merchandise. Their is just too many competitors where you can get better quality stuff for cheaper prices. No shock Qurate’s stock is at $0.37…
I’m curious as to how is QVC going to absorb HSN. I don’t think they’re going to expand the campus and create new on-air studios. Seems like a face saving tactic.
They’re not
The geniuses in the C-suite will use this time to pad their salaries and benefits and their Golden Parachute 401(k)'s while Rome burns.
They surely aren’t going to tell the rank-and-file their real plans.
Meanwhile, in Florida so many people will lose their jobs, not least of all the hosts. Set designers, warehouse, IT, call center, models, etc. etc.
Because again, management doesn’t know what to do. They have to LOOK like they are doing something, so cost-cutting, which will not save the company in the long-run but looks GREAT! in the short-run.
I would treat HSN and QVC as two separate business lines and try to get a friendly rivalry going: Assume you are still competitors like in the old days. Try to out-do one another. What can you come up with?
Something like that.
Management is clueless. It’s so obvious.
I think if you were really trying to save the companies, it would be wiser to move to Florida vs PA. Doing business would be less expensive due to taxes. It is sad that many people will lose their livelihood.
QVC is not a customer friendly environment. I have had no success trying to resolve an issue. No matter what you tell them and verify it over and over, they are tone deaf. Intelligence and common sense is lacking.
That would be the logical move. But management just does what it wants.
At this point, it’s just a game.
They will milk the cow until it dies, cashing out as much as possible before the end.
But they’ll never tell that to the rank and file.
Since HSN will remain a separate entity (for now - I’m not sure that will last), they still need their own hosts. I can’t see some of the old timers, like Bobbi Ray, making the move to PA. And maybe that’s part of Qurate’s plan - if long-time, highly paid hosts decide not to make the move, they can hire new hosts on the cheap and save payroll $$. I’m sure a lot of the production staff will lose their jobs, unfortunately. This is a cost-cutting move, pure and simple. And maybe the first step to phasing out HSN. This definitely doesn’t look like good news, long term, for HSN.

My thoughts, exactly … Won’t be surprised if one day when we tune in, the Error, Page Not Found message appears on the screen.
“They” have already blown an enormous amount of CA$H on Fifty & Not So Fabulous, the trips to Vegas, NYC, England, Ireland, Let’s go to New England for a lobster rolls, and then down south to Corky’s for pork bowls, . . . . . Just can’t spend money that they don’t have fast enough!
IMO, this is just the first step to completely shuttering the HSN brand. From their view, it wouldn’t make sense to spend $$$ on maintaining two separate brands and marketing. They’ll just rename it QVC (insert # here).
Although, long-term, I doubt even QVC survives. Shades of Sears/K-Mart; they’re trying to cut and sell off their way to profitability without making significant product changes in response to consumer behavior. This is kicking the can down the road and HSN is first in line because its hosts, behind-the-scenes employees, and real estate in FL are the lowest-hanging fruit.
What about the phone operators/customer service ? Where are they located for QVC and HSN ? Studio Park and Tampa ? Will they all be consolidated into one unit too ? Wondering if a lot of those people from HSN will be losing their jobs too.
HSN has been in existence since 1977, offers better prices and a larger variety of brands than QVC, but often has been snubbed by shoppers as not quite being able to rise to QVC’s “high standards.” Many have discovered the opposite is true. Personally, I’d like to see someone buy out HSN, and return it to a completely separate corporation. Whenever the management team at QVC decided “bigger is better” everything started to go downhill. Bad investments and dumb ass ideas for making a quick buck just don’t work. HSN has far surpassed QVC in sales and leadership until QVC took over. I think HSN can easily survive on their own. Pennsylvania is not a business friendly state, I don’t know why the Q wants to move all operations to PA. Ultimately it probably won’t matter because QVC is so far down the rabbit hole, it will never crawl out as it now is.
“And how many did you call, Plaid Death?”
I killed 2 previously successful companies!!
I put thousands out of a job!
Sick Transit Glorious Monday, baby!!
High Five! Come on! Bring it in!
Remember the day you first discovered QVC and you knew that in your heart of hearts, in the name of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, and all that is Holy, you absolutely could not, no way, not a snowball’s chance in hell, not for a day, not even for a single moment, ever exist without QVC the Almighty, even in a world filled with donuts, pizza, and spaghetti. And chocolate!
In reality, how many HSN hosts will actually make the cut. The last thing that QVC needs is more on-air personalities. The Q will possibly keep a few token hosts to soften the blow, and act as though they really do care, but they already have a glut of hosts that they don’t know what to do with. Gonna get real ugly.
In the meantime, start the interviews with this Guy …
That Guy could be competition to Rick! But he’s not on a ton, and I wonder if he’d leave Florida. I like many of the HSN hosts. Nicely dressed, pleasant, professional…not “quirky”, no manifesting, and seems like less talk about personal lives.
I believe QBait is going to have a difficult time attracting smart, well mannered, impeccably groomed, HSN professionals, convincing them to uproot their families and leave behind everything they hold near and dear just to relocate to the Philly area to climb aboard the S.S. Titanic II. And when all is said and done, the Q will toss the “excess baggage” overboard in a futile effort to save the sinking ship.
They’ve been playing this strategy for a while now. There are waaay too many hosts for hours available as it is. Which means, I think, most hosts are PT. Probably some way they can get screwed out of receiving “FT” benefits by the way they are “classed” at the company.
Really, management may as well pull a Captain Edward Smith right now and just slam full speed ahead into the iceberg. Lot of similarities between the Whitestar Line and Qurate in terms of how they operate.
